Porsche Taycan – The all-electric track-attack machine!
When we talk about performance, there is no doubt that Porsche is the pinnacle of performance vehicles, and all their vehicles till date has thrilled the automotive enthusiasts over the last 70 years.
All the major automotive manufacturers are stepping into the electric vehicle game in recent times and Porsche too took the leap of faith and introduced the world with the all-new Porsche Taycan – an all-electric sports car.
Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG said “This marks the start of a new era.” The Porsche Taycan is a four-door sports saloon capable of delivering everyday usability and the true Porsche performance trait on command and surely is a sign of the upcoming electrical revolution.
The Name – TAYCAN
During the naming process, the marketing experts selected their favorite names, assembling a list to be presented to the assembled board in the autumn of 2017.
The decision is made: Taycan.
A name that fulfills every phonetic, legal, creative, strategic, and model-specific requirement. Composed of two terms of Turkic origin, this word can be roughly translated as “soul of a spirited young horse.” And that’s exactly what the first fully electric Porsche will be: lively, impetuous, vigorous, light-footed on long stretches without tiring, and free-spirited.
The name reflects both the source and the future of the brand: the horse on the Porsche crest, the expression of its soul, on its way into a new era of the sports car. A perfect fit, too, with the slogan of the advertising campaign: “Soul, electrified.” Taycan also has positive associations in many of the world’s languages: in Japanese, for instance, taikan means roughly “physical experience”—driving in its most electrifying form.
The Design of Porsche Taycan
The design of the Taycan is clean and puristic with an unmistakable Porsche DNA which is the signature statement of all Porsche vehicles. The front is wide and flat with cosmetic wings, the hood especially looks aggressive with the sporty lines on it and the LED Matrix headlights with the new generation four-point DRL system.
The highly trimmed side looks very sporty and futuristic and the sloping sporty roofline transitions perfectly with the signature Porsche rear of the Taycan contributing towards the aerodynamics of the Taycan. The Porsche branding has been given a glass-effect and is integrated into the new generation Porsche tail light bar.
The all-new Porsche Taycan is powered by two highly efficient electric motors in combination with a very powerful lithium-ion battery, one of each motor is placed on the front and the rear axle respectively making the Taycan an all-wheel drive. These motors are permanently excited synchronous machines and therefore benefit by delivering continuous power and higher range.
The Porsche Taycan uses 800-volt technology in the drive system and is the first production vehicle to have done this possible. The interface between the electric motor and the battery is a Pulse-controlled inverter which converts the direct current from the battery into alternating current for the electric motor when driven.
The power and the torque are further even more boosted by the “Hairpin” winding design of the stator coil. The rear axle of the Taycan has been installed with a two-speed transmission system developed by Porsche with the first gear boosting the acceleration from stand-still and the second gear has a long gear ratio for high efficiency and high power reserves.
The Porsche Taycan uses the integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control that analyses synchronize the Porsche’s centrally networked chassis system in real-time. The chassis system also is equipped with adaptive air suspension with three-chamber Porsche Active Suspension Management electronic damper control and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport electromechanical anti-roll system with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus.
The Taycan also uses an Energy recuperation system so that when the driver presses the brake pedal, the electric motors decelerate the vehicle by being used as generators and the mechanical wheel brakes are applied so that the kinetic energy is converted back into electrical energy.
The Taycan puts on offer a variety of driving modes like “Range”, ”Normal”, “Sport”, and “Sport Plus” and an “individual” mode for individual settings configuration. All of these modes adjust the suspension accordingly to provide optimum results.
Interior – Taycan
The cockpit of the all the new Porsche Taycan is very futuristic with the free-standing 16.8-inch curved instrument cluster that is said to be the highest point on the wing-shaped dashboard which also houses the traditional Porsche clock. The instrument cluster is wider than the standard Porsche steering wheel offered as standard on the Taycan.
Alongside the instrument cluster is the 10.9-inch infotainment display and uses Porsche Connect with optimized voice control which can be operated by saying “Hey Porsche”. The front central tunnel boasts a large 8.4-inch center console with haptic feedback. The AC vents are well placed in the Taycan which uses a Virtual Airflow Control System with different modes available for the airflow settings.
There are two luggage compartments, the front compartment can house 81 litres of luggage and the rear compartment has 366 litres of storage space making the Taycan perfect for a long trip for two people.
The seats are comfortable and the entire interior in the Taycan is leather-free and is made from recycled materials to make the Taycan a sustainable electric sports car. This time around, Porsche is using the “Foot-Garage” system to ensure utmost sitting comfort in the rear seats.
